SPIRITUAL BEGGARS Record BBC Session
April 30, 2003Swedish hard rockers SPIRITUAL BEGGARS, the band featuring former CARCASS and current ARCH ENEMY axeman Mike Amott, recently entered BBC's legendary Maida Vale studios and recorded a session for the Radio One "Friday Rock Show". The guys recorded new versions of "Beneath The Skin", "Young Man, Old Soul", "Mantra" and a storming cover of BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE's "Not Fragile". The session turned out "really cool" and there are plans to release these recordings commercially sometime in the future, according to the band's official web site.
Amott, who is currently finishing up work on the new ARCH ENEMY CD, spoke to BBC about SPIRITUAL BEGGARS' songwriting process.
"Sometimes I have a riff that I come up with at home and then I take it to the studio," he said. "Often I come up with the melodies when I don't have an instrument - such as when I'm on the train - and hum it to myself. Then I'll play it on guitar later. Sometimes we just improvise in the studio. Sometimes songs start with a drum rhythm or a lyric. It's just about being creative.
"If I hear a cool line in a movie, book or magazine I'll keep them all together — it's like a jigsaw puzzle," Amott continued. "I try to keep things fairly simple — I try not to use technical words. I just bought a rhyming dictionary recently — a producer in England (Andy Sneap) gave it to me, I guess he thought I needed it!"
